AJ in charcoal by Faye1891 AJ in charcoal by Faye1891
Okay well this is Angelina Jolie: my first portrait in charcoal. I dont hate it, but I dislike it a little.
Charcoal is really hard to draw with, so I'm going to follow an advice from a friend: Pratice shading in graphite and get good at it before going into charcoal.

This might be the last drawing with charcoal I do for a long time until I get more used to shading with graphite.

I agree with you, KayyWhyyy, charcoal is easiers than pencil. But, pencil i more exact.
I add your art to favourite, I like this so much! Particularly eye, and how you use lights.
KayyWhyyy Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2011
Idk about that because charcoal is what I am best at...pencil is harder for me

like-textas Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2009
i love the eye. its good, but the only thing i dont like is that there are no wrinkles or lines on her knuckles or hands. too smooth.

apart from that, very nice =]

What is to dislike about this one? I love it. Very real.
id1889 Featured By Owner Jul 6, 2008
i love using charcoal. heres a real good tip. use a q-tip to shade in the charcoal. your picture is beautiful, it just needs to be shaded a little more. so i encourage you to get that q-tip and see what happens! it will be uplifting haha
eatenalivebyboredom Featured By Owner Apr 27, 2008
the shading is a bit rough around the cheeks, but overall, it's an amazing piece of work. =]

When I first saw this my first reaction was "Woah! Awesome photo!"

Closer look showed it was a drawing. VERY impressing.

i really must commend you for this. i was actually able to tell who it was just from an eye before i even read the title. that take skill
halogenimageX-2 Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2007
i am actually doing a very large self portrait for art class right now, and it is very difficult even doing it in simple black and white pencil. this is quite good. the eye especially.

I have nevr used Charcoal before either. But form the looks of it , you sure can shade,. I think you already shaded wiht graphite. If you ever shaded iwth a pencil, a regular pencil has graphite in it. SO Im sure you have shaded wiht it. But anways I didnt know that you used cotton balls and q tips to hade!!! Is there any htign lse you use???

I just take a look in some of your beautifull drawings, for have sure that you are, and will be, a great artist! You are so young, and makes draws that many people that study this a lot of time can't duet.

Beautiful charcoal drawing. i could never get into charcoal i found it too smudgy, but you have done a wonderful job, especially with the eye.
DaleNorvell Featured By Owner Feb 1, 2005
Yeah, I want to practice more with charcoal too, I just REALLY hate how messy it is. Damn the messiness!!! :shakefist:

This looks great though. I like it, and I could somehoe tell who it was just from her eye, weird huh? Means you did a good job though, the tones are what stand out.

I'm gonna sleep now, but I'll come back and comment on your other work in the near future! :D

charcoal is so hard to work with, what kind were you using? Vine? Was it soft, hard, med? I don't like the actress, but I love the drawing.
Faye1891 Featured By Owner Jan 24, 2005   Traditional Artist
The carcoal was just a charcoal pencil I think and it was medium. It is extremely hard to work with, yes. But I am getting the hang of it.
